Mason jars and chalkboard paint have had their moment in the sun, according to Zillow Digs' predictions for the hot home trends of 2016.

The Zillow Home Trends Forecast combines data from a survey of interior design experts and an analysis of popular photos on Zillow Digs, and it shows that crafty chic accessories no longer make the cut. Their more sophisticated, glamorous cousins are on tap for the new year.

As we approach 2020, it seems we're craving a throwback to the luxurious look of Art Deco, which first started gaining popularity in the 1920s. The style's trademark geometric patterns and honeycomb shapes will be all over everything from wallpaper to artwork, and modern improvements on gold statement lighting fixtures will pop up in kitchens and dining rooms.

All this glam means there's no more room for the easily smudged chalkboard trend, and the rustic look of Mason jars are equally passé.

In their place will be encaustic tiles, which still bring a natural look into the home but with a sleeker vibe. The intricately patterned tiles are made of different types of clay or minerals and are expected to show up in bathroom showers, kitchen backsplashes, and even fireplace mantels.

Artisan accent pieces — travel souvenirs, flea market finds, and other one-of-a-kind or handmade items — are what people will be wanting to fill their homes with in 2016. This doesn't mean big-box stores will be completely shut out, however. Expect more partnerships between large brand names and global artisans to emerge.

These possibly dramatic statement pieces will be softened by nubby wool or other natural fiber rugs. The neutral hues create the perfect indoor/outdoor vibe while balancing bolder colors.

That translates to "bye bye, burlap," as homeowners will pick fabrics that can also work for pillows and throw blankets instead of relying on the harsh and overplayed material.
